Statewide touring show roundup, February through April 2015

State Theatre, Portland

  • What’s on the bill for the next two months at the State? Well, to round out February, Young the Giant plays a rescheduled show set for Feb. 13; comedian Jim Jeffries is set for Feb. 14, jam voyagers Kongos, Sir Sly and Colony House are set for Feb. 17 and Umphrey’s McGee are set for Feb. 19.
  • Moving on into March, George Thorogood and the Destroyers will play on March 1, the RuPaul’s Drag Race Battle of the Seasons tour is set for March 2, the Punch Brothers are set for March 7, Gov’t Mule and John Scofield will play on March 11, followed by comedian Hannibal Burress March 12 and the third annual State of the State concert, featuring local rockers Spencer Albee, When Particles Collide, 6Gig, Crusoe and Tall Horse, all playing with the Maine Youth Rock Orchestra. March closes out with Blackberry Smoke on March 26.
  • In April, Dweezil Zappa’s “Zappa Plays Zappa” tour comes through on April 9, and a few days after that, it’s indie rockers Matt & Kim on April 11. Shakey Graves plays on April 15, and on April 18, the highly anticipated show from Neutral Milk Hotel is set. Yellowcard plays with Finch and Downtown Fiction on April 20, and April wraps up with the Wailin’ Jennies on April 28.

Port City Music Hall, Portland

  • February is halfway done, but there’s still great shows at Port City including the strange and beautiful Swans set for Feb. 17, the Expendables on Feb. 18 and hip hop legends Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic on Feb. 20. The Lone Bellow is set for Feb. 23, Chadwick Stokes plays Feb. 25, the Juliana Hatfield Three plays on Feb. 26, Timbre Timbre is set for Feb. 27, and local rockers Murcielago are set for Feb. 28.
  • In March, Port City hosts the likes of J.D. McPherson on March 3, Jukebox the Ghost on March 4, Odesza on March 7, BUKU on March 12, and the pride of Portland, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, on March 13. Current Swell will play on March 14, Andy Grammer and Alex & Sierra are set for March 18, and songwriter Todd Snider will play on March 20. Wrap up March with Particle on March 21, and A Loss For Words on March 28.
  • Finally, April sees shows from the likes of Zach Deputy on April 11, Gregory Alan Isakov and Jolie Holland on April 16, the Dead Sessions on April 17, Between the Buried and Me April 18 and Twiddle on April 20.

  • Out in this beautiful western Maine venue, in the remainder of February, check out Greg Brown on Feb 26 or bluesman Eric Bibb on Feb. 28. In March, comedian Bob Marley is set for March 5, Asleep at the Wheel and the Quebe Sisters are set for March 7, guitar legend Jimmie Vaughan plays on March 10, the Indian-New Orleans fusion band Red Baraat is set for March 13, Howie Day and Ellis Paul play on March 15, songwriters in the round featuring Erin McKeown, Robbie Fulks and Jenny Schienman are on March 21, and on March 27, it’s the Mallett Brothers Band and North of Nashville.
  • In April, enjoy the Gibson Brothers on April 4, Joan Armatrading on April 8, or Kathy Mattea on April 25.

  • At the Space Gallery in Portland, some of the excellent and interesting shows coming up include Pan-African musician Sinkane on Feb. 20, guitar virtuoso Kaki King on Feb. 28, experimental pop with Jenny Hval and Nat Baldwin on March 10, Italian psychedelic metal with Father Murphy and local guests Falls of Rauros and Afraid on March 17, punk rockers Screaming Females on April 7, African band Tal National on April 11 and Nels Cline with Julian Lage on April 18.
  • Merrill Auditorium in Portland will present with the State Theatre composer and songwriter Sufjan Stevens on April 14.
  • At the Asylum in Portland, some of the upcoming shows include Nashville bands Red, Islander, 3 Year, Hollow and Signal to Noise on Feb. 27, Drkwv and Jaw Gems on Feb. 28, DJ Rhetorik and Michael Christmas on March 8, Piano Men: The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John on March 14, the Frank Hannon Band on March 26, Walk the Moon and the Griswolds on April 10, and Howie Day on April 25.
  • There are several fun shows coming up at the Strand Theatre in Rockland, including Cajun band Beausoleil on Feb. 13, Howie Day and Ellis Paul on March 13, and Seth Glier and Jason Spooner on April 11.
  • At the beautiful Waterville Opera House, check out shows including Los Lobos on March 3, comedians Paula Poundstone on March 7 or Juston McKinney on March 28, and Mary Chapin Carpenter and Lunasa on April 20.
